Differential with Japanese Banner

It helps, when one is a still life artist, to understand the secret lives of things. Objects can be quite lively when you get to know them. This differential, for instance, persuaded a fit young man to carry it 12 miles out of an abandoned junk pile somewhere in Alaska, despite the extra weight. When he left the state, he put it on the grass to one side of his yard sale, where it attracted me. Since then, it has been waiting patiently in my "heavy metal" box, all the while exerting a kind of tug on my awareness. In another part of my life, I was exploring old Japanese textiles. I did not realize this banner would have an affinity with the differential, but there it is.

Tributary of the Thoroughfare

On our sixth and last painting day in Denali National Park, I went back to Eilson Visitor's Center to catch the afternoon shadows. This little river joins up with the Thoroughfare River, which runs roughly parallel to the Alaska Range. What a gorgeous last day!

Mary Bee came down from her hike on a nearby ridge, found me painting, and took this excellent photo.

The next morning we all went back to the north side of the lake for an early walk. We came across this old truck (no, it wasn't abandoned), and wished we could just get in and have our own adventure vehicle. I can't imagine two better people to have adventures with!

Mary Bee caught this photo of Paul and me having one last walk before leaving the park. Just another beautiful morning in one of the most beautiful spots on earth.

This is the last post of the Denali National Park series. Thanks to Mary Bee, to Paul, to friends who helped make this trip possible, and to all of you for being an appreciative audience!

The Veg Van is almost ready

What you see above is the "before decoration" view of the truck, and the next 2 images are of course the designs as they will be applied to the truck. Recognize those paintings?

What do you think, are these eye-catching enough?

If you want to look at the paintings before they became part of the design, look at my posts on 4/5, 4/19, 5/4, and 5/25 of this year.

Fran Durner, gardening writer for ADN, has just posted on her blog Talk Dirt to Me about the upcoming veg van makeover. Please click on the link and read her excellent article!

Many thanks to Alison Arians of Glacier Valley Farms CSA, and all the folks at Graphicworks and Norstar Color for their work on the scans. And a big thank-you to Fran Durner, who has been following our progress for months.

Keep an eye out for that Veg Van and please email me at info@carollambertarts.com and tell me what you think!

And while I have your attention, please come see me this weekend if you are anywhere near Fireweed Gallery in Homer. I will be doing a painting demo all day Saturday, July 18!

Cam's Bug Eye Sprite

Once again, I visited my friend Cam's outdoor collection. He tells me this is called a Bug Eye Sprite, or sometimes a Frog Eye Sprite. In any case, it's a racer and it still runs great. Just now, however, the wildflowers are gaining on it.
